Jewels, Jewels Everywhere

September 10, 2009

Micah WorkingWe all have them. We all share them. What’s yours?

When you go into your favorite coffee shop (or juice bar or bistro or lunch cafe) do you have a favorite barista (or creator of yummy foods) that you hope will be available to make your item that day?

Have you noticed that even through two people can use the exact same ingredients, the results are noticeably different?

Why is that?

What is it that really happens when you take that cup of coffee from your favorite barista? Certainly there is more than the coffee, water and cream that you receive.

There is an aspect of that barista, called her jewel (or energy signature, or home vibration), that is unique to her and you are responding to that. It’s a quality, a vibration, that you are responding to and receiving.

How do you feel as you receive your coffee? What attributes come to mind after that interaction? It could be anything – gentleness, joy, connection, integrity …

What is your jewel? What is it that people receive when they interact with you? It is that trait or attribute that draws others to us. You and I can do the exact same procedure or session and yet they will offer different things because our jewels are different. What is yours?

And then, how brightly do you let your jewel shine?

Is it time for You to Lead?

September 10, 2009

pathWhile it is a big question, realize it is also a life long process. All it really takes is the desire and commitment to do so. Then, let the adventure begin! But first, let me ask you this -

Are you willing to be responsible for every decision that you make?

You are the one that chooses your direction in life—and how you will respond to situations that show up. No one else is responsible for you. Even as an employee, you agreed to do a job for a certain wage and it is your responsibility to hold up your end of the agreement. When you step into self employment, you wear both hats (well, many hats actually).

But even now, do you stand behind your decisions?

Do you walk your talk?

When we work for someone else, it is easy to just follow someone else. I’ve heard it said, “Suit up, show up and move at a reasonable pace.” When problems show up, it is very common to play the blame game with fingers pointing to someone else. With your own business, those days are over.

The responsibility and liability of leadership will be yours if you start our own business. Period. Are you ready to accept the responsibility and liability of being your own leader?

Who are you when no one is looking?

What are the skills that you feel are important leadership qualities? What are the qualities that you want to develop in yourself? Mastery of these skills simply requires attention and practice.

Let me say that again: Gaining mastery of leadership skills that are important to you simply requires practice. Practice. Practice. Practice.

You will have opportunities to practice these attributes on a daily basis. And each time an opportunity arises, you will choose whether to respond in a way that is in alignment with this new skill, or not.

Either way is ok—this is a learning process. Sometimes we don’t respond as well as we would like to. When that happens, simply re-evaluate the situation and reflect on how you would have preferred to respond. You will get another opportunity to practice it, I promise!

What will happen is that you will become more aware of the opportunities to practice your leadership skills, thereby making more conscious decisions and becoming the person you want to become. It’s called personal growth and empowerment.

In order to flourish, you must be willing to take charge of your life.

As you develop the ability to become aware and restructure your life with clarity where necessary, your leadership of self skills will continue to develop. The Toastmaster club produces a magazine to support the growth of their members. In Becoming a Leader One Step at a Time, they note:

“The contemporary view is that leadership is a set of attributes, attitudes and skills that by and large can be learned or developed through work, study and experience. Management scientists have looked at and studied factors such as Consideration—the leader’s concern for followers’ well-being (think clients); Structure—the leader’s skill at setting goals and determining work schedules and methods; Production Emphasis—the leader’s ability to get work done well and on time; and Sensitivity—the leader’s ability to keep people on the team happy with one another (think clients and word-of-mouth advertising). From The Toastmaster, Sept 2002, pg 9.

As you can see, they are all learnable skills. You can do this, one step at a time. The question is—do you want to? What leadership skills are important for you to develop?

Some people are very good at communicating with their Self, and others are rather new to it. Here is one meditation tool for you to use to gain the answers from within ourselves. The following “Answer Room” exercise comes from Barbara Marciniak’s Path of Empowerment. It provides a framework to ask questions and receive answers.

You can empower yourself, and set the reality that you want into motion, by taking time to communicate with the subconscious and unconscious levels of your mind. First slow down and focus on your breath. Gently separate your jaw and relax your tongue, and allow deep, rhythmic breathing to relax your body and open your mind to an enhanced state of awareness. Continue to breathe deep and imagine your body fully energized with golden spirals of energy. Now visualize a wave of energy, like a gentle spring shower, sweeping over the top of your head down to the bottom of your feet. Any tension that you have been carrying will be washed away, leaving you feeling fresh, clear, and free to proceed unencumbered into the depths of your being. There is a place in your mind called the “answer room,” and you must use your imagination to cross the bridge and find your way to the door. It may be on a busy street in an old stone office building, down a quiet country lane, or secluded like an eagle’s nest overlooking a cliff.

The answer room is your creation and can be anywhere you choose; feel a strong intent to go there, and then see yourself standing before the door. Take special note of the quality and color of the door, as well as the shape of the doorknob and once they are clearly etched in your memory, open the door. The answer room is very well furnished with beautiful fabrics and a comfortable seating; fascinating pieces of art, a globe, books, plants, flowers and a tea set add a warm welcome, and large glass doors open onto a sumptuous garden. Now enter the answer room and make yourself at home. You will find anything you ant in this room. Once you are cozy and settled in, thinking about what you want to know. Look around the room, allowing your gaze to rest here and then there, steadily taking in all that you see. When you are ready, clearly state the question to which you are seeking an answer and ask that an answer be clearly presented within the next three days; then sit back, enjoy some tea and bask in the serenity of your room of inner knowledge. You can visit this room anytime you choose to fine-tune your frequency and gain greater clarity about yourself and the world at large.

We all need some time to find counsel with ourselves—this is one way. There are many other ways to do it. We each need to find out which ways work well for us.

Is it time for you to step up to the plate of Self-Leadership?

Are you ready?

Is it Time to Embrace Risk?

September 10, 2009

Crabbing,09Life is a risk. Some people are certainly more comfortable with it than others, and the level of what we are ready, willing and able to risk varies but that said – we all take risks, everyday.

How do you approach risk?

Where is your edge?

Have you jumped off that ledge yet to see whether you would fall or fly?

How many times?

We will have to learn to face our own failure once, twice, three or even more times before we make our business successful. We will have to be prepared to learn from our own mistakes. And we will have to learn how to deal with the ups and downs in our own business.

It is likely that, as a practitioner of holistic health, one of the best assets we have is our passion. But are our passions strong enough to let us take the risks of learning to be a good leader, particularly if this risk is directly linked to what our family will eat at the end of the day?

To be our own leader means to directly face the unpredictables in life with courage. We will learn how to take calculated risks to the best of our knowledge. We will trust that our decisions are the best we can do at any given moment. And we will learn.

Since it takes time for us to learn good leadership through our practice, we will have to accept all the consequences. Taking risks, boldly facing challenges and acting decisively will help you become a very strong leader.

It doesn’t mean that we have to do it all alone. Some services may be hired out to specialists in those fields, such as accounting or legal work. There are many organization and schools to help us learn various new skills that we will need. There are other practitioners that could be wonderful to brainstorm with. However, we do have to be solely responsible for all aspects of our business.

In her article, Risk Taking in Business has its Rewards (http://searchwarp.com/swa64569.htm), Regina Barr offers these first steps towards learning to be comfortable with risk taking:

How can you overcome the fear of taking risks? Try these simple steps:

  1. Decide what your tolerance is for risk. Some business owners might feel perfectly comfortable putting their business on the line regularly, whereas other business owners may not feel comfortable doing this unless the chance of success is very high. Both are taking risks, but at the level they feel comfortable with.
  2. Start small. Take a new route to work. Go see a movie by yourself. Try coffee instead of tea. You get the picture.
  3. Take “deliberate” risks. Deliberate risks are ones that you choose to take, typically after completing some fact finding or analysis.
  4. Set risk taking goals. Ask yourself what you hope to accomplish. Then write down one goal about the risk that you would like to take. Break it down into smaller chunks. Then do one thing – today – to move yourself forward.
  5. Have a contingency plan. Ask yourself what you would need to do to recover should the worst happen, and then create a back up plan.
  6. Reward yourself. Risk-taking can be draining, particularly if you are not used to it. So, don’t forget to do something nice for yourself after taking a risk – no matter how large or small!

What are the benefits? People who are comfortable taking risks typically experience “increased autonomy, heightened self-esteem, a more positive attitude toward life and an increased sense of personal power.”

Risk taking is a mind-set. Are you ready to learn to be a calculated risk taker?

What is Aromatherapy?

September 10, 2009

lavenderImagine the scents in the air as you are walking through a summer garden .. or the deep forest .. or grass just after a spring rain … or your place of business … or your home. Do they all bring up pleasant images and uplifting thoughts as you take in a nice deep breath of the air? Ideally, they do. If not, you can affect a change relatively easily.

Aromatherapy is the art and science of blending essential oils to calm, balance and rejuvenate the individual. The art applies to blending, the science applies to understanding the chemical therapeutic properties of each oil.

When applied topically, they are absorbed through the skin and are transported through the body via the circulatory system. It is at the cell level that they can affect the physical body. When inhaled, the molecules affect the limbic system, via the olfactory nerve receptors. The limbic system is the core of emotion and memory, among other things. The connection between our emotional health and physical health is well known. Commercially, many companies use aromatherapy to influence customers buying habits, to increase productivity and accuracy at work and to keep people relaxed and calm in potentiall stressful situations.

This is a wonderful way to improve the quality of everyday living on many levels (physical, emotional, spiritual). Aromatherapy is a natural way to feel better, both on the inside and the outside, using pure, safe essential oils extrracted from naturally aromatic living plants. These botanical esences help us to balance, support our well-being and contribute to our inner harmony.

Many people use store bought air fresheners to enhance their environment. And that can work, but you may be dumping a lot of toxic chemicals into the air which may cause more harm than good in the long run. Perhaps it is time to switch to something that not only smells good, but is good for you too!

I will be re-introducing a few well loved products and a few new ones in the upcoming months so stay tuned! I’m jazzed!!!!

Importance of Self Care

September 10, 2009

HeartCatcusA common belief used to be that you could provide healing work to others without taking care of your own healing. That has shifted into a common belief that you must do your own healing work in order to be effective with others.

Doing your own work, expanding into the more that you are, has always made sense to me no matter what profession you are in. Those “interesting things” from our past can shift from baggage we carry around that weights us down and holds us back, to nuggests of wisdom that we can draw on for wisdom and strength.

Retelling old drama’s over and over only serve to keep us stuck. Let it go, get the help you need to support yourself in moving beyond the stories so that you can be here now, in all your strength and glory.

Freedom from the past, being present in the moment and enjoying what life has to offer is a juicy way to live. And as you are more “whole” or present in your life, your creations – whether that is web design, client sessions or latte art – will be that much better!

Permission to Assist

September 10, 2009

handHave you ever had the experience of all of a sudden feeling hands on your back or neck? You turn to see who it is, and it’s someone you’ve never met? How did you feel? Were you comfortable with the touch?

I remember one workshop I attended. During lunch I sat down next to people I didn’t know. The woman on my left was chatting with those on her left, so we didn’t initially speak. All of a sudden I felt a strong hand rubbing my back and digging into my muscle tissue.

“Excuse me” I thought, “we haven’t even met.” I was a bit put off by her assumption that I would enjoy her touching me. I did not invite her to touch me, nor did she ask – heck, I hadn’t had any interaction with her at all. She just jumped in and set about getting to know my muscle tissues. I’m sure her gesture was intended as a warm way to say hello, but it felt inappropriate.

At a workplace harassment training a couple weeks back the point was made that ANY touch could be misunderstood due to our different cultural backgrounds, belief systems and life experiences with touch. There are so many variables, that we can never really know how someone will interpret our touch. And yes, I know we live in a touch deprived society (that’s a whole other topic!), but from a legal stance and in respect for other’s culture, belief systems and such, it’s best not to walk up and touch someone.

So how do you navigate the business of touch and the respect of another person?

You wait for the invitation – simple as that.

If you’d like to offer your services, do just that – “You look like you’re in pain. Would you like me to see if I could help?” Then honor their choice – yes or no. Knowing that you care is a gift in itself. A connection through the eyes, your smile, your kind words – they do make a difference, whether or not you physically touch someone.

You aren’t going to heal the world by running around touching everyone you can. You’ll be much more effective at it (if that is your desire) if, as you do your own healing, you let yourself be available to those who want your help. Honoring another, even when they are hurting and you really want to help, means respecting their wishes. Empower them to know what they need.

What is your experience with this?

What size is YOUR box?

September 10, 2009

dog boxI had a chat with a friend of mine the other day about relationships and limitations. We all have limitations, whether we’ve created them ourselves or have adopted those created by others. The freedom comes in recognizing that we have the power of choice to live within them or expand them to suit our needs.

For instance, I prefer to abide by the law. Most of those limitations are ok with me and I can play happily within them. Kevin and I are in a monogamous relationship – those limitations work well for us. The belief that doctors will take care of all our ills and we have no responsibility in it, is far too limiting a concept to me as I believe health and wellness is more than the absence of disease and we need to be responsible for ourselves.

For our children we set the limitations, or boundaries, for them to explore and grow within. As they mature and begin to accept responsibility for their actions, we can expand their boundaries. In this way, they are able to grow up in a size-appropriate environment as safe as we can provide, and explore their ever expanding world.

As adults, we create our own limitations or adopt those of others to live our lives. There isn’t one right way – what is right for me may not be right for you and what is right for you may not be right for me. Some “limitation boxes” are small and made of steel, other are large with perforated sides so that one can peek beyond their structure, but remain in their safety zone, some have doors so they can go out and explore but have a safe place to come home to and some have no sides or walls at all and anything goes. We create them to make order of our world and to function within it. And we all have the power to change them at any time. It is all simply choice.

How do you feel about what you’ve created?

And if there are areas where you feel stuck or limited, how do you break free? Or do you?

Is your Verbiage putting you at Risk?

September 10, 2009

DangerSignOnce I was called out to work on an injured racehorse. The veterinarian had already been there but wasn’t able to get close enough to the horse to do what he wanted to do, so the owners decided to try me. I was able to reduce the pain and inflammation considerably – to the point that the veterinarian could do his “doctoring.” I thought it might be the beginning of a business relationship – or at least the occasional referral.

But no. As it turned out he tried to discredit me in the community. Fortunately everyone he spoke to already knew me – and told him he was mistaken – so the talk died out. But he could’ve pursed it legally, attempting to claim I was “practicing medicine without a license.”

He wouldn’t have won, as I was working within my professional scope of practice, but he could have tried. If someone is going to question the legalities of what you are doing it will more likely be a professional that sees you as a threat rather than your clients.

Many practitioners use the words examine, diagnose, prescribe, treat, cure, patient, etc without even realizing that all of these words are “copyrighted” by the American Medical Association. These words are illegal to use in your practice unless you are a licensed medical practitioner.

Realize that we are in different businesses. We are in the health-building industry and those in the medical field are in the disease industry. We do not “treat diseases” as only doctors can do that! However, there are no laws in any state that prohibit the practice of educating people about health and lifestyle.

A Medical Doctor is one who examines or diagnoses, prescribes, advises, recommends, administers or dispenses a drug or medicine, appliance, mold, cast, application, operation or treatment of whatever nature, for the cure or relief of a wound, fracture or bodily injury, infirmity or disease for compensation of any kind, direct or indirect.

If you wish to name diseases and organs, and it is your desire to treat them, then you are not practicing health, you are practicing medicine and are guilty under the law. Rather than working in the health field, you would be illegally working in the disease industry.

It was pointed out by two medical professionals that in order to get medical attention, you must qualify. Either you must fall victim to some degenerate disease or you must become a victim of some devastating accident. And as superb and educated as the medical community is, it only meets the needs of 30% of our diseased population. Even though they have addressed themselves extremely well to the traumatic and crisis conditions of our people. 70% of our unhealthy people have disease conditions which are outside the range of the medical community’s expertise. There is a huge opportunity to help people increase their wellness, their health, their happiness.

Do you know what your state’s medical statutes are? They vary state to state so you can always write to your State Medical Board and request the statues of your state regulating the practice of medicine so that you know them.

In the meantime, be aware of your language and how you position yourself. Are you helping someone to increase their health and wellness? Or are you treating a disease that they have? What industry are you really working in?
